A few words about Nuremberg
Near Munich, in the southeast of Germany, is set one of the cities of ideas and tragedy, of grandeur and devastation, the city of Nürnberg. At the impressive age of 956 years, Nürnberg has survived Empires and wars, has inspired painters and musicians to bring us today its always reviving splendor.
Back in the 15th and 16th century Nürnberg had become the most precious pearl of medieval art, establishing unique harmony of the German gothic traditions smoothly incorporated in Italian Renaissance. The city flourished in its cultural apogee and in this great époque in the artists' ateliers masters were born, such as Veit Stoss, Peter Vischer, Adam Krafft, Michael Wolgemut and the great Albrecht Durer. The magic of the Meistersingers was born and headed along the centuries, till Wagner was inspired by them in his opera "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg". Later on science flourished hand in hand with the artistic spirit of the city and industrial progress inevitably followed. Koberger's first printing press was set here, Regiomontanus' world-famous astronomical observatory was built.
Nürnberg has preserved some of the most impressive churches in Germany. Many of them did not survive the destruction of war, but many were saved and completely restored. Many of the city old buildings of fascinating architecture and imposing silhouettes followed the same faith, but gladly part of them was saved. Only Dresden among German cities competes the cruelty of devastation caused by World War II. Nürnberg used to be the Nazi ideological center. It witnessed the speeches of Hitler and the inhumanities of war, in the end of which the city was almost completely destroyed. In one night the splendid medieval jewel was turned into ashes. In 1946 the War Crimes Tribunal sat in Nürnberg Justice Palace that can be still visited in the city center. When the city celebrated its 900th birthday, in 1950, the ruins of the amazing old buildings and the medieval ramparts were still buried in dust and ashes. Today you can visit the Zeppelinfield Arena, the place where Hitler used to organize the famous Nazi rallies. The area has been transformed into a park with a residential area, a concert hall and a trade fair.
After the war Nürnberg regained its spirit of artistic inspiration and progressing liveliness. It qickly recovered to become one of the most important industrial, trade and cultural centers of Germany. It has a charming pedestrian central part, the Altstadt, with nice cafes and shopping areas. With plenty of historical sites to visit, museums, artistic galleries and concert halls, Nürnberg attracts tourists from all over the world to feel its charm and restored splendor. The National museum of Germany was founded here in the middle of the 19th century, the old Hohenzollern castle still welcomes visitors, the Albrecht Durer house was transformed into a museum, and so much more has to been seen and felt.
The most famous export industries of the city include beautiful handmade toys and the famous gingerbread. The Nürnberg eggs, the first pocket watches that were born here, are still produced today and you can buy one as a souvenir.
Lively and dynamic, Nürnberg welcomes today in its cosmopolitan heart visitors and guests for leisure or business. Entertainment is guaranteed in the stylish clubs, bars and pubs of the city and art lovers would never miss the divine portion of beauty and inspiration Nürnberg has to offer.
